The extension of OpenOffice 2.3.1 to embed voice comments within Impress presentations, eVoice, is now available at the official extensions site. The extension requires Java JRE/JDK 1.6.0, which must be selected in "Tools->Option->Java" menu. For Linux users, either a version of OpenOffice with GStreamer integration for media support, or the Java Media Framework is required. Detailed instructions for installing the JMF can be downloaded from here. Windows users must disable the Quickstarter. Once you have satisfied the prerequisites, follow these steps to install the Add-On on both Linux and Windows:
  • Launch OpenOffice
  • Create a new document if required
  • Select the menu item Tools->Extensions Manager
  • Press the button "Add"
  • Select the extension file
  • At the end of the installation process, restart OpenOffice

Once the Add-On is installed, either click on the Toolbar button Comment or choose the "eVoice->Insert" menu item to display the dialogue box that allows you to manage the voice commentary for the current slide.

VoiceRecorder

The user can start the recording by pressing the Rec button. Once a comment is recorded via the microphone, the user can delete the current recording and start a new one by clicking again the Rec button (the user is prompted for confirmation). The user can also listen to the recording by clicking on the Play button, can save any changes by pressing the Ok button and can exit without changes by clicking on the Cancel button.

After pressing the Ok button, the symbol of a speaker appears on the slide to indicate the presence of a voice commentary. During the presentation, the audio commentary is played automatically when each slide appears.
