Multimedia data processing from robots (drones/rovers)

In the context of the research activities of the Internet Media Group in collaboration with the PIC4SeR center (https://pic4ser.polito.it), we are looking for master thesis students interested in studying and implementing systems that can efficiently handle multimedia data produced by drones and rovers. It is expected mainly to focus on images acquired by drones. Such images might represent visible light (RGB images) or also other wavelengths using multispectral/hyperspectral cameras. Algorithms for efficient processing and storage will be developed, as well as to identify interesting areas in the image that might need further elaboration. Other types of information could include data coming from sensors of a typical smartphone device, including wireless signal strength. It is also possible to experiment in real scenarios with actual robots.  The activity can be carried out without being physically present on a day-to-day basis at the Politecnico.

Requirements:

• Basic knowledge of multimedia data management (images, videos)
• Basic ability to process data (via scripts in e.g. python and/or Matlab)

Processamento di dati multimediali provenienti da robots (droni/rovers)

Nell’ambito delle attività di ricerca dell’Internet Media Group all’interno del centro PIC4SeR  (https://pic4ser.polito.it), si ricercano studenti interessati a studiare e realizzare modalita’ di gestione di dati multimediali prodotti da droni e rovers. Ci si aspetta di focalizzarsi principalmente su immagini acquisite da droni. Tali immagini potrebbero rappresentare luce visibile (immagini RGB) oppure altre lunghezze d’onda acquisite tramite camere multispettrali/iperspettrali. Saranno sviluppati algoritmi per un processamento e immagazzinamento efficiente delle immagini, ed anche per identificare parti interessanti delle immagini che potrebbero necessitare di ulteriore elaborazione. Altri tipi di informazione potrebbero includere dati acquisiti da sensori di un tipico smartphone, incluso il livello di segnale wireless. E’ prevista la possibilita’ di sperimentare utilizzando robots reali.  L’attivita’ non necessita di una presenza fisica giornaliera presso il Politecnico.

Requisiti :

• Conoscenza di base della gestione di dati multimediali (immagini, video)
• Capacita’ di base di processare dati (tramite script in, per esempio, ma non solo, python e/o Matlab)
